Where to even start...my mom reached an age "milestone" recently. She said that she wanted to hear all the fun things that are shared at a funeral, while she is still alive. So instead of some hokey team building exercise, I decided to throw her a party where all the guests bring a short talk and tell some stories about mom. We called it a "fake wake" and it was so much fun. My mom was grinning from ear to ear the entire time while hearing stories and thoughts about her. She's influenced so many people and my mind was filled with memories from growing up. Thanks everyone for making it a successful party. I did an original cheer complete with pom poms because my mom was a cheerleader in high school and growing up we would hear a random cheer of encouragement from time to time. Aaron made up a poem, Kris shared some memories, and Quinn kept talking and talking (trying to top mine, but we all know my tribute was the best). Andrea even came in via Skype to share her thoughts. My uncle shared of times when they were little growing up in the small town of Salem. Everyone share some good memories that took me back. I forgot that we would make "boats" to race down the irrigation ditch. I forgot that she would tell others we were "precious cargo" when a friend drove us places. Jamie made up a cute poem and Sara shared from her heart, Wade told some funny stories of when he and Kris were dating, and Wes expressed new gratitude for the recent addition to his family. Larry, my mom's husband, shared some cute insights to life in high school and then meeting up again at a high school reunion. It was a sweet night, and of course we had to serve ham, funeral potatoes, rolls and the RIP cupcakes.
My mom flew back with me to spend some time at our house. One day I even took the kids out of school (which I never do) so they could have a movie day with lots of treats. We loved every minute of this visit and it really helped the kids to get to know their grandma one on one. She read and played games with the kids and just came to be a part of our craziness. Thanks grandma gorgeous...you are beautiful inside and out.
